Class 40(7) [Also in Group XL(b) ] A waveguide switch for connecting four waveguide channels a, b, c, d in pairs in two different ways comprises two waveguides 3, 4 with directional couplers 1, 2, preferably 3dB, spaced apart and a metallic tape 7, perforated or slotted at 8 and 9, Fig. 3, for introducing reflectors simultaneously into the waveguides 3 and 4 between the couplers. The distance between the nearest points of the perforations or slits 8, 9 is equal to the distance l between the guides 3, 4. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 an endless metallic tape 10, slotted at 13, 14, 15, 16 is introduced into the guides 3, 4 by being wound on two similar pulleys 11, 12. The distance between the nearest points of the slits 13, 14 and also that between the slits 15, 16 are equal to the distance l between the guides 3, 4. The positions of the slits in the tape 10 are so determined that they can be simultaneously positioned within the guides 3, 4. The horizontal distance between the portions of the tape and the diameters of the pulleys are equal to a quarter of the wavelength propagated in the guides 3, 4. The openings of the guides 3, 4 through which the tape 10 penetrates and emerges are provided with traps 17, 18, 19 and 20. Two parallel tapes moving in opposite directions can be used. The switch described above can be used to connect a transmitter and two antennae alternately or to connect the transmitter and the antenna of a system of radio-detection so that the presence of the latter is not disclosed during operations of regulation or testing. In the latter case the channel c of the switch is connected to the transmitter, channel b to the antenna, and the channels a and d to non-reflecting terminal devices which are placed in the channel a for dissipating the power of the waves produced by the transmitter.
