800,923. Frequency-separating networks. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. May 3, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 13684/56. Class 40 (8). A band-pass arrangement designed to separate a band of frequencies centred on a frequency #1 from a number of other adjacent bands centred on frequencies #2, #3 . . . #n comprises two magic-T junctions 8, 9 whose symmetrical arms 3, 4 and 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> are connected by waveguides of equal length containing bandpass filters, the waveguides and filters being so arranged and constructed that a path difference of one half wavelength (#g/2) exists between the portions of wave energy reflected by the filters over an extended range of frequencies. The input, comprising signals on channels #1, f2, #3 . . . #n, is applied to the H -arm 1 of the magic-T 9 where it is distributed equally between the symmetrical arms 3, 4. The filters F1,3 and F1,4 are tuned to a centre frequency #1 so that energy in this channel passes to the magic-T 8 and is coupled into the output arm 1<SP>1</SP>. Because of a difference of #g/4 in the electrical distances between the junction 9 and the filters F1,3, F1,4 a path difference of #g/2 exists between the portions of energy in channels f2, f3 ... #n, reflected back to the junction 9 and this energy is coupled into the E-arm 2 of the junction. If the waveguides 3, 4 were of identical cross-section the electrical length of the longer path would increase more rapidly with frequency than that of the shorter path. In order to ensure a constant path difference over the whole range of frequencies f2 ... #n the cut-off frequency of the guide 4 providing the shorter path is increased by fixing a metal insert 7 against one of its narrow walls. Alternatively, the cut-off frequency of the other guide 3 may be decreased by providing a ridge of metal on one of the broad faces. A combination of these two methods may be used. The branches 31, 41 of the junction 8 are similarly modified so that the circuit can be used for operation in both directions. Matching posts t are provided at the waveguide bends.
