Abstract

1,252,969. Waveguide couplers. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 16 April, 1970 [13 June, 1969], No. 30037/69. Heading H1W. A waveguide coupler in which two rectangular waveguides have a common narrow wall and which is capable of supporting the TE 10 and TE 20 wave modes of two separate frequencies comprises a coupling gap in which there are at least three reactive elements resonant at or near one of the two frequencies, the elements being aligned along the coupler axis. The reactive elements are preferably closed rings 8 separated by a quarter wavelength. As shown, the coupler is used as a diplexer in which the two waves enter the respective input ports 3 and 4. Wave energy of the non-resonant frequency passes from the input of one waveguide to the output of the other while the resonant input frequency in the second waveguide passes undisturbed through the waveguide. The reactive elements are provided in two groups of three rings separated by the plate 10 which is the 3 dB point. The phase velocity of the TE 10 wave mode in the double width coupling section of the waveguide is less than that of the TE 20 mode and for the non-resonant frequency it is reduced by the reactive elements such that at the output the modes combine to give both frequency outputs at one port with none in the second. The input and output ports are provided with stepped portions (Fig. 3, not shown) to suppress the TE 30 mode. The horizontal limbs of the closed rings 8 may be locally thickened to reduce the possibility of voltage breakdown.
