Abstract

1350824 Aerials HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 28 May 1971 [2 July 1970] 18027/71 Heading H4A [Also in Division H1] A waveguide antenna coupling device includes a rotating joint and pairs of orthogonal coupling transducers on either side of the joint respectively for two input signals and two output signals, the arrangement being such that each output signal contains quadrature components of each input signal. As shown, a rotating joint 65 divides a circular waveguide into input and output sections 50, 52 respectively associated with orthogonal pairs of input and output rectangular waveguide ports 54, 56 and 64, 66. Input ports 54, 56 are connected to two sources of multiplexed signals through a magic-T 74 and paths 56, 76 differing in length by 90 degrees. The input signals may be represented by cos # 1 t and cos # 2 t. They propagate towards the rotating joint 65 as two counterrotating circularly-polarized waves. The rotation of the joint may be represented by addition of phase angles Œ # respectively to these C.P. waves, so that the waves in the output section 52 may be represented respectively by 1/#2 exp.i(# 1 t + 0) and 1/#2 exp. -i(# 2 t - #). The outputs coupled to the orthogonal waveguide ports 64, 66 may therefore be represented respectively by cos (# 1 t + #) + sin(# 2 t - 0) and sin(# 1 t + #) + cos(# 2 t - #). Each output contains quadrature components of both inputs and may be fed to the input terminals of an antenna for formation of a wide beam. Each input signal may contain a number of multiplexed frequency bands, and the transmission bands of one signal may be interspersed among those of the other.
