843,634. Waveguide accessories. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSONHOUSTON. Feb. 13, 1957 [Feb. 14, 1956], No. 4940/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(a)] One or more discharge tubes are positioned in a coupling aperture in the common narrow wall 4 of two contiguous waveguides. The tubes are arranged to fire when the coupled energy exceeds a certain level. The discharge tubes 6, Fig. 1, (only two shown), have metallized ends 8 which make contact with metallic collars 10 through conductive rings 9. The tubes are secured by threaded bushes 11. The whole of the aperture 5 may be occupied by a tube in the form of a parallelopiped 62, Fig. 5, whose upper and lower surfaces are metallized and electrically connected to the walls of the guides. Better coupling between the two guides may be obtained by using two spaced apertures each provided with discharge tubes. Where the coupling is used as a duplexer in a TR system, one of the waveguides is connected between a transmitter and an antenna and the other between a receiver and a dummy load. In order to reduce the level of energy transmitted by the duplexer, two duplexers may be arranged in parallel, energy from the transmitter and from the antenna being equally divided between the two duplexers by means of known 3 db. couplers (Figs. 4a, 4b, not shown).
