Abstract

869,588. Floor cleaning and polishing machines. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. April 13, 1959 [Aug. 22, 1958], No. 12486/59. Class 138(1). Apparatus for scrubbing and polishing floors and for scrubbing rugs has a motor 12 mounted on a frame 11 below which extends a pair of horizontally spaced vertical spindles, gearing means drivingly interconnecting the motor with the spindles, a pair of disc brushes 10 detachably secured to the spindles below the frame 11, a pair of supporting attachments 151 (Fig. 6) for carrying part of the weight of the apparatus when used on rugs and including rollers 159 mounted on rigid supporting means, vertically extending sockets at the front and rear of the frame 11, assembly portions on the supporting means which are detachbly received in the sockets, and an adjustable connection between the supporting means and the assembly portions permitting the spacing between the rollers and the frame to be varied. The vertical sockets are formed by pairs of guides 153 of L-shaped crosssection cast integrally with the downward extending flange of the frame 11. Each attachment 151 has a rigid, angular mounting plate 152 having a tang portion 152a insertable into a vertical socket. A leaf spring 154 riveted to the portion 152a presses against the flange of the frame 11 to frictionally retain the attachment in position. A pair of wooden rollers 159 are mounted for rotation on a plate 157 by means of an axle member 161, the plate 157 being secured against the plate 152 by means of a screw 158 to provide for vertical height adjustment. The frame 11 and brushes 10 extend some distance to the front and side of the motor 12 so as to permit polishing and scrubbing under overhanging portions of furniture. When the apparatus is used for polishing, circular polishing pads 92 are secured to the faces of the brushes 10.
