Abstract
869,483. Photo-electric measuring apparatus. HELLIGE & CO. G.m.b.H., FRITZ. June 29, 1959 [June 28, 1958], No. 22198/59. Class 40(3) In a method of detecting the presence of particles in a liquid a first liquid and a second liquid are brought together as superimposed layers and a light beam is passed first through one liquid and then through the other, the light dispersed from the particles being detected by a photo-cell. In the detection of antibodies the liquids are superimposed in a glass container f, the second liquid containing a known concentration of antigen, and the first an unknown concentration of antibodies. A light beam from a source a passes through the container and through a hole h in a photo-cell i when there is no antibody present, and hence no dispersion of light by aggregates. However, when aggregates are present dispersed light falls on the sensitive annular region of the photo-cell i. The output of the photo-cell is registered on meter M and by use of a calibration curve, Fig. 2 (not shown), the concentration of antibodies may be determined. A method of deriving this curve is given. The photo-cell receives light over a solid angle indicated by the lines n and this angle may be varied by providing the cell with an adjustable diaphragm.
