Abstract

1278784 Turbidity of liquids DISTILLERS CO (YEAST) Ltd 15 Jan 1970 [23 Oct 1968] 50389/68 Heading G1A A method of apparatus for determining the content of solids of above a predetermined particle size suspended in a stream of liquid, comprises passing a part of the suspension through a flow cell and measuring its reflectivity or transmissivity, passing the same or another part of the suspension through a separator, which separates the solids of above the predetermined particle size from the liquid, and then passing the resulting liquid through a flow cell and measuring the reflectivity or transmissitivity again, the difference in the measurements providing a measure of the turbidity caused by the solids of above the predetermined size. In an embodiment, Figure 1, comprises a separator 11, flow cells 10, 15 and cocks 3, 8, 16 and 19, the cocks are first arranged so that the suspension flows through both flow cells 10 and 15 so that a zero difference can be registered on balancing bridge circuits (box 29). The turbidity measurements are effected by a common light source 21, heat filters 22, photo-slits 23, 24 and detectors 25, 26. The suspension can be passed through one flow cell via the separator 11 to the other flow cell, or it can be divided into two parts; one part passing through one flow cell, the other part passing via the separator 11 to the other flow cell. The difference in the outputs of photo-cells 25, 26 give an indication of the absorption of the particles retained by the separator 11 and hence an indication of the content of these solids in the stream flowing through the pipe 1. In an alternative embodiment employing a rotating sectored disc Fig. 2 (not shown) a single photo-cell (37) is energized alternately by light transmitted through each of the cells in turn.
