Abstract

1,013,874. Photo-electric determination of turbidity. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 3, 1964 [July 3, 1963], No. 26325/63. Heading G1A. Determination of the turbidity of a fluid is carried out using apparatus comprising a casing 12 in which are mounted a photo-cell 17 and means for directing a light beam into a sample cell 11, these being movable relatively to each other so that in one relative position the photo-cell receives light transmitted through a fluid in the sample cell from the light-directing means and in the other, light scattered by particles in the fluid. The light source 13 and condenser system 15 are mounted in a side tube 14, which may be wholly enclosed in the casing in a more portable version of the apparatus. The cell 17 which may be photoemissive, -conductive, or -voltaic, is mounted on a turntable 18, which is rotated by a knob 21, and may, in another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), move inside the sample cell. In operation, the photo-cell is first arranged to receive transmitted light, and the rheostat 30 is adjusted to give a full scale deflection on microammeter 31. The resistor 28 reduces the current to the same proportions as that obtained from the cell when receiving scattered light. The turning of the knob 21 to bring the cell into this position, also short circuits the resistor 28. The reading obtained for scattered light is compared with that for transmitted and the turbidity obtained by reference to known graphs &c. A meter already calibrated in solids content may be used. The sensitivity rheostat 30 may, if desired, be in the source supply circuit.
