Abstract
666,886. Photo-electric colorimeters. ROUY A. L. M. A. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33601/48. Class 40 (iii). In a photo-electric colorimeter, use is made of the whole scale of the instrument by mounting the photo-cell so as to rotate to bring the pointer to full scale deflection with the minimum sample density. As shown, light from a source 1 passes through one of a number of filters 3, 4, 5 mounted in a rotatable holder 2, through the sample in a container 6 and on to a photo-cell 10. This photo-cell is mounted on a pivot 9 and may be turned from the outside of the casing by a knob 16 which acts through worm gearing 11, 12. The axis of the pivot lies in the plane of the sensitive surface and the centre of the photo-cell lies on the axis of the light. In a modification, Fig. 2, the centre of the cell remains aligned with the axis of the light beam but the pivot is shifted. The photo-cell is mounted in a holder 23 and is moved to one side, the distance being indicated on the scale 30. The block 24 carrying the pivot is then brought back an equal distance relative to scale 28. Normally the axis of the pivot will be required to coincide with the edge of the cell. The cell may be pivoted horizontally. The Specification states that the total current output of the cell follows a cosine law with the angular rotation whether a converging, parallel or diverging beam is used.
