Abstract
1460623 Detecting suspended particles in a liquid BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 9 April 1975 [9 May 1974] 20512/74 Heading G1A In a device for examining aircraft fuel for water or solid impurities such as disclosed in 1037096 an improved disperser (with no moving parts) is used. The disperser, Fig. 2, comprises an input pipe 30 supplying a small diameter tube 33 as shown, the outlet of the tube 33 being positioned near the centre of a circular plate 36. Thus liquid forced through tube 30 is dispersed and it passes out through holes 37 spaced around a disc 34 connected as shown to an outlet pipe 31. Liquid passing down a fuel line 7, Fig. 1 passes via a sample line 2 to the disperser 3 and thence to an air/vapour separator 4. The dispersed liquid is then separated into two lines 5 & 6, one line passing through a heater 7 to dissolve the suspended liquid and to create a reference. Each line is connected to an enclosure 9 or 12 which are illuminated by a common light source 18. Photo-electric devices 17, 19 measure the light absorption of each stream, the photo-electric devices outputs being compared to provide a measurement of the suspended liquid particles present. A further photocell 15 is positioned as shown to detect the scattered radiation and provide a measurement of the solid particles present.
