Abstract

869,352. Platforms for handling freight. BROWN & CO. (MARINE) Ltd., GEORGE, and BROWN, J. G. April 21, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 12526/58. Class 78 (4). [Also in Group XXXIII] A cargo ship is provided with a series of fingers 1 extending outboard of the side and/or stern to provide an intermediate station for loading and unloading by fork lift trucks operating on the deck and quay. The fingers 1 are each pivotably mounted and adapted to be stored vertically inboard and are made from channel-section. The fingers 1 may be joined to a common shaft so as to pivot in unison which action may be effected by either a hand lever or electric motor. If the deck is below the level of the quay the fingers 1 may be transferred as a unit to the quay and adapted to extend over the deck from suitable fixing points and counterbalance weights. For handling cased cargo and motor cars, pallets and ramps are provided. The fingers 1 may be mounted for slidable movement outboard and inboard.
