Abstract

869,319. Two-part couplings. UNITED-CARR FASTENER CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 36622/59. Class 38 (1). A polarizing key 10 for use in a printed circuit board edge connector 14 comprises a strip of flat sheet metal having bent ends 18, 20, an arm 22 and a tang 24. The connector consists of a number of apertures 26 each containing a contact 12 having flexible legs 34, 36 and, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, a printed circuit board 44 has keyways 46 which conform to the positioning of two polarizing keys 10 inserted in the connector. As a key is inserted in an aperture with its end 20 lowermost, the arm 22 is led into engagement with the radiused portion 32 of one of the flexible legs of the contact 12 which is flexed as shown in Fig. 7. Further downward movement of the key causes the end 38 of the arm 22 to pass the outermost radius of the flexible contact leg which then snaps back to its original position and prevents withdrawal of the key. The upper end 18 of the key overlies the open end of the connector aperture and prevents the entrance of a printed circuit board not having a corresponding keyway.
