868,995. Frequency changing circuits. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Jan. 20, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 41699/58. Class 40(6) In a frequency changing circuit for a radio. receiver the local oscillator 10 operates at one half the beat frequency, its tuned circuit 11 being earthed at a centre-tap and having symmetrical tappings which feed a frequency doubler compromising crystal diodes 14, 15. The diodes feed directly into the mixer, without the interposition of filter circuits tuned to the second harmonic of the oscillator frequency. The mixer may comprise a thermionic valve or, as shown a transistor 21, the signal being applied to its base and the local oscillations injected into the emitter: the diodes 14, 15 are so poled as to provide a conductive path for the transistor emitter current. The arrangement may also be applied to arrangements in which a higher harmonic of the oscillator frequency is used, e.g. by using two frequency doublers in cascade to provide a quadrupler.
