Abstract

868,693. Oil &c. wells. GRAND ROCHESTER Ltd. June 25, 1959 [June 26, 1958], No. 20541/58 Class 85. A blow-out preventer consists of a resilient packer 3 which, in the normal condition shown on the right in Fig. 1, has a through-way for a drill pipe, sucker rod or the like, and is distorted by forcing down a plate 5 either to bear against the drill pipe or sucker rod, or if no pipe or rod is present, to close the passage completely as shown on the left in Fig. 1. The packer 3 rests in a cup-shaped recess in the housing 4 and is reinforced by segmental plates 9 embedded in the plastic material. Similar plates may be provided at the bottom of the packer 3. The plate 5 is forced down by plungers 6 which are depressed by the rotation of a nut 7. In a modification the plungers 6 are depressed by fluid pressure acting on an annular piston. In a further arrangement, the packer 3 is intended only to seal on the drill pipe or sucker rod, and the lower part of the packer is accommodated in an annular recess in the housing 4.
