A soft asbestos seal contains asbestos and a bonding agent with or without a vulcanizing agent, to which rubber meal is added as a filler. Preferably the materials used by weight are 39% asbestos, 35% rubber meal, 22% acrylonitrile latex solids and 4% vulcanizing agents. Thermosetting resin such as urea or melamine resin and also microcrystalline paraffin wax may also be added. A seal for low surface pressures may contain 41% asbestos, 32% rubber meal, 22% nitrile butadiene rubber latex solids, 3À5% urea resin, 1À5% microcrystalline paraffin wax, and additionally 2-4% vulcanizing agents related to the total solids. Part of the rubber meal may be replaced by cork and if required, the bonding agent may be swelled by means of an organic solvent. The seal material is manufactured on a paper-making machine from a pulp.
