Abstract

1322122 Sealing leaks DUNLOP Ltd 16 March 1972 [19 March 1971] 7413/71 Heading F2P In a method of sealing leaks in pipes and other carriers or containers of fluids, a natural or synthetic rubber latex or dispersion, which is either non-ionic or has an ionic charge of the same sign as that on the material to be sealed, is applied to the surfaces to be sealed. The latex or dispersion may be capable of being cured without heating or the latex may be non-curing or prevulcanized. The latex or dispersion may be based on polychloroprene or styrene/butadiene rubber, or on a polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile or poly-cis-isoprene. A filler of whiting, china clay, oil, pitch, wax, barytes or lithopone may be added to act as a stiffener and extender. The latex or dispersion may also include antioxidants, cross-linking agents, stabilizers, thickeners, fungicides, thixotropic agents, bacteriostats, resins or other adhesion products. A casein stabilizer is preferably added, e.g. ammonium caseinate, but soaps and low-foaming powders may also be used. The solids content of the latex or dispersion lies between 10 and 70% by weight and preferably between 50 and 70% by weight. A particular example of an anionic latex is described which is used to sea a jute-packed spigot and socket joint.
