Abstract
868,677. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957; Dec. 4, 1957 ; Dec. 31, 1957], Nos. 34679/57, 37835/57 and 40451/57. Class 39(4). A restraint for a moderator and reflector structure comprises shoes loaded against the structure by torque tubes. The drawings with application 34679/57 (Figs. 1, 2 and 5) show a mild steel casing 6 supported in a mild steel pressure vessel 2 by keys and keyways and enclosing, with end grids, a moderator structure. The grids have ties 9 and members 11 spring loaded against the moderator. Torque tubes 15 are supported by the grids and at points 17 along their lengths. Each tube comprises a long tube 19 locked to a grid at one end 24 and carried in a bearing 23 at the other. To the latter end is welded one end of a short outer tube 20 with its other end free and carrying an arm 28 pivoted to a shoe 27. This free end also carries pairs of jaws 31, 32 attached to rings 33 to link the tubes bearing on one ring of moderator blocks. One or both pairs of jaws are welded to the tube so that all or only some of the shoes move in unison. Fig. 3 of application 37835/57 shows a way of releasing overloading in a tube caused by growth of the structure under irradiation. The inner and outer tubes are not welded but are locked by fins 13; these fins will fail gradually until stronger projections 16 engage to prevent complete failure. The drawings with application 40451/57 (not shown) show the lever and shoe linked by a strut to allow freedom for movement caused by irradiation.
