855,358. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 19, 1958 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 3577/58. Addition to 782,922. Class 39(4). The moderator and reflector structure of a nuclear reactor are provided with a restraint comprising a series of elastic bands around the structure, each band comprising a series of joined links and each link comprising a nest of coaxial tubes, the restraint being characterised in that the bands are radially keyed to a restraint cylinder. Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary plan view and Fig. 3 is a cross-section along the lines III-III. Adjacent links 19 of a band are pivoted by a pin 20 to a bracket 21 attached to a restraint beam 22 which bears on the reflector structure. Brackets 23 are mounted on rings 24 welded to the restraint cylinder 17 which surrounds the reflector structure and is bolted or welded to the support grid (not shown) supporting the moderator/reflector structure. Each bracket 23 has two parallel sides, each side having a bolt 26 and lock nut 27, and each beam 22 has an integral key part 28 of rectangular cross-section which extends between the bolts 26. This arrangement allows radial movement of the beams 22 to accommodate radial growth of the moderator/reflector structure and differential expansion between this structure and the restraint cylinder but prevents tilting of the moderator/reflector which might otherwise occur due to a sudden and transient horizontal force such as might be caused by an earthquake or in a moving body such as a ship.
