Abstract

874,039. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 17, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958], No. 30920/58. Class 39(4). A cluster of fuel rods is held in a triangular array by transverse support grids which locate the ends of the rods but allow some longitudinal movement, and spring-loaded spacers are put between each group of three rods forming a triangle. Fig. 4 shows a fuel rod: a stainless steel tube 6 contains UO 2 rings 9 and a filling 10 of porous MgO; at one end a spigot 11 has two intersecting slots. Fig. 3 shows a view from below of a cluster, spigots 12 on the rods rest in short tubes 14 welded to steel strips 13, held in a stainless steel cylinder. The upper ends of the rods are located by a wire grid whose members fit into the slots in the spigots 11 to allow limited longitudinal movement. Spacers 17 consist of a twisted metal strip or a helical spring of coarse pitch.
