Abstract

1,274,405. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 23 April, 1971 [6 May, 1970], No. 11125/71. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a cluster of fuel rods 12, retained parallel and at the nodel points of a regular network by a bottom end plate 14 which bears the fuel rods 12 and by spacing grids 20, the bottom end plate 14 being connected to a top end plate (not shown) by tierods 18 which occupy certain of the nodel points of the network, where they are substituted for the fuel rods, and which are of a diameter substantially equal to that of the fuel rods, the grids 20 frictionally engaging both the fuel rods 12 and the tie-rods 18. Each of the grids 20 comprises inside a frame a network of nested metal sheets bounding cells of square section. The metal sheets have portions cut out and each is formed by two parallel rectilinear ribbons connected by narrow corrugated strips 30. The tie-rods 18 may be formed as guide tubes for neutron-absorbing control rods, or may contain a burnable poison or some other filling material. The bottom of each of the tierods 18 has an attaching stud 32 screw-threaded to receive a securing nut 34. Where the tie-rod is a control rod guide tube, the stud 32 is formed with an axial passage through which coolant flows. The top of each of the tie-rods 18 is attached to the top plate (not shown), e.g. by crimping. The top and bottom plates are formed with orifices through which coolant enters and leaves. The movement of the grids 20 along the tie-rods 18 is limited by tubular struts, such as 36, 38 and 40, borne by the four corner tie-rods 18. The total length of the struts and the grids 20 is less than the distance separating the facing surfaces of the top and bottom end plates, so as to leave the necessary clearance for total differential elongation during operation. Since the number of fuel rods 12 is much greater than the number of tie-rods 18, the frictional forces exerted by the grids on the assembly of fuel rods are much greater than those exerted on the assembly of tie-rods. As a result, such forces retain the grids on the fuel rods, while the tierods slide slightly when thermal conditions change. However, movements of low amplitude can take place between the grids and some of the fuel rods, due to differences in expansion which may occur amongst the fuel rods.
