Abstract

1362546 Fuel elements UNITED NUCLEAR CORP 23 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34685/71 Heading G6C A fuel assembly spacer grid includes individual spacers each comprising two fuel rod support members which provide resilient and rigid contact points selectively arranged throughout a basic egg-crate grid structure to provide resilient and rigid point support for each fuel rod in the assembly. The spacers are of two types, 15a and 15b, arid each has the support members joined as by welding at their ends 30a so as to capture therebetween a portion 31 of a grid plate 22 separating adjacent fuel rod cells 14. Each spacer 15a has both its support members 30 formed with a resilient spring portion 32 midway along its length and two relatively rigid stop portions (or buttons) 33 positioned on either side of the spring portion 32. The buttons 33 act to prevent permanent yield of the spring portion 32 through excessive deflection. One end of one member and the opposite end of the other member are formed with an abutment surface 35, which surfaces lie in contact with opposed recessed mounting surfaces formed in the side edges of a grid plate 22. Each spacer 15b includes two support members 40, 41, support member 40 being identical in construction to the support members 30 of spacers 15a, as is support member 41 except that the spring portion 32 is in this case omitted leaving only two buttons 33 to provide rigid contact points for the fuel rod. The spacers 15a, 15b are arranged throughout the grid structure to provide on two adjacent sides of each fuel rod cell 14 rigid contact points, and on the opposite sides resilient contact points. In the peripheral fuel rod cells, the rigid contact points on one side of each cell are provided by continuous ridges 20 formed on the outer grid plates 16, while in the corner fuel rod cells the rigid contact points on two adjacent sides of each cell are provided by these ridges 20. A plurality of openings 23, 24 in the grid plates 16, 22 permit free flow of reactor coolant through the spacer grid and about the fuel rods, and also reduce the weight of the grid.
