Abstract

The invention comprises a process for dyeing chrome-tanned leather using a water-soluble azo dye which contains at least one phosphonic acid group. The phosphonic acid group imparts water-solubility but other groups with this characteristic, e.g. sulphonic and carboxylic acid, may also be present. The dyes may be made by conventional processes from diazo or coupling components which contain phosphonic acid groups. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in conventional dyeing processes, representative being:-(1) 1-aniline-3-phosphonic acid --> resorcinol \sM 2, 5-dimethyl-1-aniline, (2) 1-naphthylamine-5-phosphonic acid --> 1-naphthol-5-sulphonic acid, (3) 2-methoxy-4-sulpho-1-aniline --> 1-amino-8-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonic acid \sM benzidine --> 1-acetoacetylaminobenzene- 3-phosphonic acid, (4) 1-aniline-3-phosphonic acid --> 1-amino-8-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonic acid \sM benzidine --> 3-hydroxy-21-methyldiphenylamine, and the copper complex of 1-amino-2-phenol-4-phosphonic acid --> (1 mol) --> resorcinol (1 mol), (5) 4-amino-21-nitrodiphenylamine-41-phosphonic acid (3 mols) --> 3, 31-dihydroxydiphenylamine, (6) 2-chloro-4-methyl-1-aniline-5-phosphonic acid --> 1-naphthol and (7) 2-nitroaniline-4-phosphonic acid --> 1-(41-sulphophenyl)-3-carboxy-5-pyrazolone. Various shades, e.g. yellow, brown, red, green and black, are obtained. Specification 763,064 is referred to.
