Lakes.-Dyestuffs containing sulphonic or carboxylic groups are combined with such non-nitrogenous organic bases as will yield therewith stable salts insoluble or sparingly soluble in water by direct reaction between the dyestuff or a salt thereof and the base or a salt thereof. Such bases are iodonium and sulphonium basss, phosphonium bases containing aliphatic groups, and secondary and tertiary phosphine bases. The products are Soluble in many organic solvents and may be used for dyeing lacquers, such as alcohol, cellon and nitrocellulose lacquers, for dyeing resins and fatty acids, and as pigments. In examples, (1) the sodium salts of 1-amino-4-phenylaminoanthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid and of 7-mtolylazo-1-benzoylamino-8-oxynaphthalene - 4 : 6- disulphonic acid are precipitated with d:phenyliodonium chloride: instead of the latter compound a sulphonium salt, such as diphenylmethylsulphonium hydroxide or phenyldiethylphosphine hydrochloride, tolyldiethylphosphine hydrochloride, or phenyldiethylmethylphosphonium iodide may be used, (2) the sodium salt of 1 : 4-dip - toluido - 5 : 8-dioxyanthraquinone-disulphonic acid is treated with the di-o-tolylmethylsulphonium salt of methylsulphuric acid or with triethylp-tolylphosphonium iodide, and (3) the dyestuff obtained by coupling diazotized aminoazobenzene with sodium 2-naphthol-8-sulphonate is treated with triethyl-p-tolylphosphonium iodide. Other dyestuffs containing acid salt-forming groups, such as rhodamines or triphenylmethane dyes may be similarly treated. Di-o-tolylmethylsulphonium salt of methylsulphuric acid is obtained by heating a mixture containing di-o-tolylsulphide and dimethyl sulphate in equimolecular proportions.
