Azo dyes; lakes.-azo dyes are made in substance or on a substratum by coupling any diazo-, tetrazo- or diazoazo compound free from sulphonic or carboxylic groups with a 2-(2<1>- hydroxy - 3<1> - naphthoylamino) - 5 - halogen-1 4 - dimethoxybenzene. In an example the dyestuff 4-chloro-2-toluidine # the chloro derivative is prepared; it gives red lakes. The bromo derivative is also specified as a coupling component, and also the following diazo components :-2 : 5- dichloraniline, 5-chlor-2-toluidine, p-xylidine, mchloraniline, 4 : 6-dichlor-1 :3-toluidine, 2: 4 : 5- trichloraniline, 4- or 5-chlor-2-aminodiphenylether, o- or m-nitraniline, 4-chlor-2-nitraniline, 2-chlor-4-nitraniline, 4- or 5-nitro-2-toluidine, 3- nitro-4-toluidine, 4- or 5-nitro-2-anisidine, 3- nitro-1 4-anisidine, 1-aminoanthraquinone, oaminoazotoluene, 2 - phenetoleazo - alpha - naphthyl - amine, dianisidine, 6-chlor-2-toluidine, 4-chlor-2- anisidine, 2 : 5-dichlor-4-toluidine, and 4-chlor-5- brom - 2 - toluidine. Specifications 6379/12 ; 17279/13, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], and 309,216 are referred to. 2-(2'-Hydroxy-3'-naphthoylamino)- 5 - halogen- 1 : 4-dimethoxybenzenes are made from 2 : :3-oxynaphthoic acid and the corresponding 2-amino-5- halogen-1 : 4-dimethoxybenzene according to Specification 23732/13.
