Abstract

868,073. Fluid-actuated valves. BECORITGRUBENAUSBAU G.m.b.H. May 23, 1957 [June 25, 1956], No. 16361/57. Class 135. [Also in Group X] A pressure-relief valve in an hydraulic pit prop including telescopic outer and inner tubes 1, 2, Fig. 1, constituting a pressure chamber 3 and reservoir 5 respectively and an interconnecting tube 6 over which a piston 4 connected to the inner tube slides, comprises a valve member 15, Fig. 3, continuously urged towards closure by the pressure in the chamber 3 and displaceable out of and into closed position by a valve-operating member comprising a leaky piston 22 and a rod 21 and an hydraulic intensifier. The hydraulic intensifier comprises a liquidfilled branch 26 connected to a space 24 between the rod 21 and a piston 25 of much larger area than the rod 21 having an extension 28 engaging the valve member 15. The leaky piston 22 is subjected on both sides to the pressure in the chamber 3 and loaded by a spring 23. On the pressure in the chamber 3 rising to a valve whereby the differential pressure acting on the opposite sides of the piston 22 overcomes the spring 23 the piston and rod 21 move rightwardly. The force overcoming the spring by virtue of the difference in areas of the rod 21 and piston 25 is increased and acts on the piston 25 and the valve member 15. The valve member 15 will, however, remain seated, since it is larger in diameter than the rod 21, until the pressure in the chamber 3 has risen to a still higher value at which the chamber pressure acting on the valve member 15 is overcome by the resulting increased pressure acting on the piston 25. The valve member 15 then opens to relieve pressure from the chamber 3 to the reservoir 5 through passages 13, 13a and 14, extension 28 of the piston 25 and the tube 6. The branch 26 is closed by an adjustable plug 27 to vary the volume of the intensifier, hence the loading on the spring 23 and consequently the operating pressure of the valve.
