Abstract

A coating composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of (a) 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic polymer of styrene or a homologue thereof; (b) more than 10 to 75 parts by weight of an organic solvent for the polymer the solvent having a boiling point of 175 DEG to 325 DEG F., and optionally (c) up to 30 parts by weight of a plasticizer for the polymer. The styrene polymer may consist of a mixture of a styrene homopolymer and an interpolymer of styrene and butadiene, or an acrylic or methacrylic ester, or acrylonitrile or an alkacrylonitrile, or an acrylamide or substituted acrylamide. The homologue of styrene may be alpha-methyl styrene, o, or m, or p methyl or ethyl styrene, or 2, 4-dimethyl-styrene. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene. The plasticizer may be 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate, an alkyl phthalyl alkyl glycolate, or a partial ester of glycerine or sorbitol and a fatty acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms or an ethylene oxide condensation product of a hydrophobic organic compound containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom and at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule. The compositions may also contain stabilizers, antioxidants, fillers, dyes and pigments. Specification 789,688 is referred to.ALSO:Paper cups and boxboard are coated by dip-, knife- or roller-coating with a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of (a) 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic polymer of styrene or a homologue thereof, and (b) more than 10 to 75 parts by weight of an organic solvent for the polymer, the organic solvent having a boiling point of 175 to 325 DEG F., and the coated cup or board heated to a temperature at least 50 DEG F. above the boiling point of the organic solvent after the solvent has been removed. The composition may also include up to 30 parts by weight of a plasticizer for the polymer, stabilizers, antioxidants, fillers, dyes, and pigments. The styrene polymer may consist of a mixture of a styrene homopolymer and an interpolymer of styrene and butadiene, or an acrylic or methacrylic ester, or acrylonitrile, or an alkacrylonitrile, or an acrylamide or substituted acrylamide. The homologue of styrene may be alphamethylstyrene, o, or m, or p methyl or ethyl styrene, or 2,4-dimethylstyrene. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene. The plasticizer may be 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate, an alkyl phthalyl alkyl glycolate, or a partial ester of glycerine or sorbitol and a fatty acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, or an ethylene oxide condensation product and a hydrophobic organic compound containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom and at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule. Specification 789,688 is referred to.
