Abstract

A thixotropic coating composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a finely-divided organic film-forming material consisting of polyvinyl acetate, a copolymer of butadiene-styrene, an acidic copolymer of methyl methacrylate and an acrylic acid ester of a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol, a pigment, and from 0.3 to 2.0 per cent by weight based on the composition, of a finely-divided water-swellable hydrous silicate. The composition has a "plastic viscosity" of at least 0.6 poise at 25 DEG C. and a "hysteretic viscosity loss" of at least 20 units as measured at 140 r.p.m. with a Precision-Interchemical Rotational viscosimeter at 25 DEG C. The hydrous silicate may be magnesium silicate, a magnesium-calcium-aluminium silicate such as purified clays of the montmorillonite, bentonite, and attapulgite type. The compositions are prepared by milling and may include additives such as soap, emulsifiers, stabilizers, fungicides and protective colloids, plasticisers and solvents. Examples are given of thixotropic paints based on (1) styrene-butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl acetate, and acidic methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate copolymer latices which include additives such as titanium dioxide, iron salts of nitrosobetanaphthol, phthalocyanine blue, carbon black, mica, aluminium or magnesium silicate, hydrous magnesium silicate, casein, watersoluble cellulose ether, potassium tripolyphosphate, and fluoride, soya lecithin, glycerol monoricinoleate, pine oil, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, polypropylene glycol, hydrocarbon resin emulsion, tricresyl phosphate, phenyl mercury oleate and pentachlorophenol.
