Abstract

Paper, or wood &c. is impregnated or coated with (1) a water-insoluble linear copolymer having an apparent second-order transition temperature (Ti) between 25 DEG and 90 DEG C. derived from monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, at least one monomer comprising 3 to 7% of the copolymer and being of the formula: <FORM:0907674/IV(a)/1> where R is H or a methyl group, and R1 and R2 are H or a -CH2OH or a -CH2OCH3 group and (2) 10 to 30% on the weight of the copolymer of a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin condensate. The monomers for the copolymer may include alkyl methacrylates, the alkyl group being of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or t-amyl-, cyclohexyl-, or benzyl-acrylate or -methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, chloro-, or p-methyl-styrene, and may be copolymerized with softer monomers including alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, the alkyl group being of 5 to 18 carbon atoms, and acrylates of primary and secondary alcohols of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
