Abstract
A varnish resin is prepared by heating a mixture of (1) from 20 to 80 parts by weight of rosin, a rosin ester, hydrogenated rosin or a hydrogenated rosin ester and (2) from 80 to 20 parts of a mixture of a monovinyl aromatic compound and a nuclear alpha-methylene lower alkyl aromatic compound wherein the alphamethylene lower alkyl group contains 3 or 4 carbon atoms, in which mixture the monovinyl compound represents 50 to 80 per cent by weight thereof, at an elevated temperature to effect interpolymerization. The monovinyl aromatic compound may be styrene, o- and p-methyl styrenes, o- and p-ethyl styrenes, o-p-dimethyl styrene, p-chlorostyrene, p-methoxy styrene or vinyl naphthalene. The alpha - methylene aromatic compound may be a -methyl styrene, p-methyl a -methyl styrene, a -ethyl styrene or p-chloro-a -methyl styrene. A peroxide catalyst may be present and a refluxing temperature (above 150 DEG C.) is preferably maintained. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, in an inert solvent such as diethyl benzene, or in aqueous emulsion. The products are soluble in aromatic and aliphatic solvents and also form varnishes on heating with drying oils and polyhydric alcohols. The polymerizable mixture may also contain 1 to 15 parts of a drying oil such as linseed or tung oil to yield products of increased oil solubility.
