Abstract

A composition comprises a polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound, an inorganic ester of a bromo-alkanol as flame-retardant agent and an organo-tin compound as stabilizer. The polymer may be derived from styrene, b -methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, a -chlorostyrene with or without acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylic or methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene; or may be a graft polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound (with or without acrylonitrile) with natural or specified synthetic rubbers; or may be a blend of a polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound with natural or synthetic rubber. The bromine compound may be derived from phosphoric, sulphuric, boric, isocyanuric or arsenic acid and especially suitable is tris (dibromopropyl) phosphate. Tin compounds specified are tin tetrabutyl, tin tetraphenyl, alkyl and aryl tin halides, dibutyl tin -dilaurate, -distearate, -dioleate, -maleate, -oxalate and -adipate, dioctyl tin-dilaurate, -distearate, and dibutyl tin di-(nonylthioglycollate). The ingredients may be mixed dry or in emulsion or solution and may be formed into shaped articles.
