Abstract

867,404. Cartons. ARMELIN, E. R., and PLASKETT, A. F. G. March 26,1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 14156/58. Class 18. A carton with rectangular sides 1, 2, ends 6, 7, top 3 and bottom 4, 5 has an opening formed in adjacent portions of each of the panels containing the two top corners of the carton at the end 6, a closure hinged to the top 3 or the end 6 and which includes flaps 13, 14 abutting the sides 1, 2 and the flaps 15, 16 overlapping the inner surface of the sides 1, 2 and locking means 8 for holding the carton closed. The carton of Figs. 1 and 4 is assembled by folding the side panels 1, 2 upwardly from the top panel 3, the end panels 6, 7 are folded on to and glued to flaps 9, 10, the flaps 15, 16 are folded inwardly, a panel 12 is folded upwardly and the flaps 13, 14 are folded to overlap and are glued to the flaps 15, 16. The bottom panels 4, 5 of the carton may be glued together before or after the contents have been inserted. In the latter case the contents are inserted through the top corner opening. The closure is held in place by a tongue 8 being releasably held between the panel 12 and the edges of a recess 17. In a modification, Fig. 10, a cigarette carton has two corner openings, each of which is provided with a closure. to form each closure, flaps 33, 34 and a panel 32 are folded upwardly, and flaps 35, 36 are folded inwardly to overlap the flaps 33, 34. The closure is locked in position by a tongue 28 engaging a slot 38 (not shown) between the outer edge of the flap 33 and the inner surface of the panel 32. A channel shaped partition may be provided between the openings.
