Abstract

867,001. Liquid piston engines. SHAUGHNESSY, T. W. Sept. 25, 1959 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 1131/59. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). [Also in Group XXVI] In a fluid drive engine the hollow pistons 7 force hydraulic fluid through a drive shaft 2 to the interior of a turbine wheel 3, the escape of the fluid from which through outlets 14 causes rotation of the wheel 3 and shaft 2. The hydraulic fluid escaping from the wheel 3 returns through passage 4 and is returned to the spaces beneath the pistons 7 by a screw pump formed on the shaft 2. The pistons 7 are hollow so that gas is trapped therein above the surface of the hydraulic fluid, which gas is compressed on the downstroke of the pistons and assists their return on the upstroke. The cylinder inlets 9 and outlets 8 are controlled by a sleeve 18 which is moved downwards by the piston and upwards by the hydraulic fluid.
