Abstract

866,442. Chick boxes. FIELD, SONS & CO. Ltd., and THORNBER BROS. Ltd. Nov. 5, 1959 [Nov. 6,1958], No. 35666/58. Class 18. A box 1 for housing chicks has flat side walls and an upstanding inner wall 8 spaced from the side walls of the box by a platform 10 disposed between the inner wall and the side walls, the platform being spaced above the bottom of the box to form an air chamber therebetween, ventilation openings being provided for an air supply to the enclosure formed by the upstanding wall 8. The box is divided into two identical sections by a transverse partition 3 of double thickness where the layers of the double thickness may diverge towards the box sides to provide bevelled corners 2a at the inner corners of each compartment. The outer corners 2 of each compartment are also bevelled and each bevelled corner is supplied with a ventilation hole 5 or 7, above the level of the platform 10. Ventilation holes are also provided at the same level in the wall 8. Air circulates through the holes 7 from ventilation holes 7a formed in the box base in regions where the corners 2a diverge to provide ducts. Ventilation holes 4a, 6a are provided in the opposite sides and ends of the lid flange 21 to correspond with holes 4, 6 in the top of the box. The holes may be so placed as to correspond when the lid is fitted in one position, and to be out of register when the lid is replaced end for end. Holes 22 may be provided in the lid, and battens 23 may be placed either at the base or on the lid of the box to assist ventilation. The box 1 is preferably formed of board comprising flat layers of paper with corrugated paper therebetween and the walls are formed of a double thickness of the board, secured by staples.
