Abstract
The invention comprises 4a , 5- and 4b , 5-epoxy-3-keto-steroids of the general formula: <FORM:0864607/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 represents CH3 and R represents (HO)CH3, or (HO)C2H5, or when R1 represent H, R represents (H)OH, (H)OAcyl, (HO)CH3 or (HO) C2H5, and the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 3-keto-D 4-steroid in solution in an organic solvent such as methanol or ethanol with hydrogen peroxide under alkaline conditions. A mixture of the 4a , 5- and 4b , 5-epoxides is produced and may be separated by crystallisation and chromotography. In the examples the following compounds are prepared: 4b , 5-epoxy-19-noretiocholan-17b -ol-3-one and the acetate and b -cyclopentylpropionate and the corresponding 4a ,5-epoxy-19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one compounds; 4b , 5-epoxy-19-nor-etiocholane-17a -methyl-17b -ol-3-one and 4a , 5-epoxy-17a -methyl-19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one and the corresponding 17a -ethyl compounds; and 4a , 5-epoxy-17-methyl-androstan-17b -ol-3-one.
