Abstract

The invention comprises esters of a benzylphenoxyacetic acid of the general formula <FORM:0705251/IV(b)/1> wherein R, R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a methyl or ethyl group with a monohydric alcohol containing up to 8 carbon atoms. The esters may be formed by reacting the acid with an alcohol, e.g. in the presence of hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, or by reaction with diazomethane. In examples (1) methyl 2-benzyl-4-chloro-phenoxy acetate is prepared by refluxing 2-benzyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (prepared as in example 1 of Specification 690,816) and methanol with a sulphuric acid catalyst; (2) n-propyl 2-benzyl-4-chloro-phenoxy acetate and (3) methyl 2-benzyl-4-chloro-3:5-dimethyl phenoxy acetate are prepared similarly.
