864,509. Electrical measuring - devices. METTLER, E., [trading as METTLER, FABRIK FUR ANALYSENWAAGEN, E.]. July 13, 1959 [April 4, 1959], No. 23980/59. Class 40 (1). In a precision balance the magnetic coupling between a pair of coils is varied by inserting a conducting screen into the magnetic circuit in order to indicate the deflections of the balance beam. Each coil is wound on a U-shaped yoke, 4 and 5, Fig. 1, of powdered ferromagnetic material stuck to a conducting base-plate 3 by a synthetic resin. Conducting non-magnetic screen 11 attached to the balance beam moves freely between pole-pieces 4<SP>11</SP> and 5<SP>11</SP>, the magnetic field being confined to the gap between these pole-pieces by screens 13 and 14 and cover 20. The coupling between the coils may be measured by connecting one coil to an oscillator and the other to a valve voltmeter via coaxial cables 9 and 10, or alternatively the coils may be connected, either in series opposition or series aiding, in the frequency determining circuit of an oscillator so that the frequency of the oscillator is a measure of the position of lug 11.
