Abstract

903,171. Measuring electrically. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959 [Jan. 30, 1958], No. 3178/58. Class 40 (1). A displacement transducer comprises a coil movable, with the member whose displacement is to be measured, in an alternating magnetic field having a field strength which varies substantially linearly along the displacement path, and means for indicating the voltage induced in the coil. As shown, Fig. 1, the movable coil 3, which may have an iron core, is displaced along the common axis of two fixed coils 1, 2, each of which has a progressively increasing winding density from its inner end to its outer end, the fixed coils being connected differentially to an A.C. source so that a zero field exists midway between them. Displacement of the coil 3 from the null position produces a signal, the phase and magnitude of which are indicative of the direction and extent of the displacement, the signal being passed, via a phase-sensitive network 5, Fig. 2, to a voltmeter. If displacement on one side only of the datum is required, one of the fixed coils provides a uniform field and the phase-sensitive network is dispensed with.
