Abstract
864,407. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 12, 1956 [July 11, 1958], No. 34430/59. Divided out of 864,406. Class 103 (1). A disc brake in which the disc comprises a ring 11 extending inwardly from the periphery of a bell housing 10 to which it is secured, and opposite faces of the disc 11 are engaged by opposed friction pads or shoes 16 and 21, 29 of which one, 16, is located within the bell housing 10, which is provided with at least one opening in its peripheral wall through which that friction-pad can be inserted or removed .In one embodiment, Fig. 1, similar to that described in Specification 864,406, from which the present Specification is divided, the friction pads 16, 21 and 16, 29 are mounted at the ends of diametrically-extending pivoted levers, one of which, 19, is of " banjo " type, and the friction pads or shoes within the bell housing 10, may be inserted or withdrawn, through the hole 43 in the housing, to one side of the shoe. The actuating lever 23 and the second lever 24 are formed with laterally projecting bosses 37, which are received between the horns 15 on the fixed spider 14, which takes the torque on these members, when the brake is applied, and the beam 19 has similar bosses between the horns on the other side of the spider. In Figs. 2 and 3, the disc 45 is carried by the housing member 47, the pads 48 being gripped by oppositely non-pivotally mounted pistons 51, one of which may be withdrawn or inserted through the aperture 59.
