Class 123(2) The heating surfaces of a steam generating plant associated with a Siemens- Martin open-hearth furnace 1 comprises tube banks 7, 8 of a waste heat boiler 6 heated by waste gases flowing thereto from the furnace through a duct 5 and certain water-cooled constructional ports of the furnace such as the door frames surrounding the charge openings 2, 3, 4, both the boiler and the furnace heating surfaces delivering steam-water mixture into a common drum 9 by pumps 11, 10 respectively, the pumps being independently controllable so that the two circulations can be adjusted in accordance with the load variations during the furnace operating cycle. A standby pump 12, preferably having an output such that it can take over the duties of both of the pumps 11, 10 in the event of their failure is provided.
