Classes 64(1) and 123(2) In a steam boiler unit combined with a hot-water heating system, a portion of the flue gases heating the steam boiler is bypassed and used for heating a hot-water unit, means being provided for opening or closing the by-pass for including or excluding the hot-water heating system as required. In the form shown, hot gases from the combustion chamber A after flowing over the heat-exchanging surfaces B, C, D of the steam boiler are discharged at H. A proportion of the gases may be by-passed through a duct G, and through a hot-water unit F to a duct K, an isolating damper L for the hot-water unit being provided in the duct G. The proportion of by-passed gases may be regulated in accordance with the demands made on the hot-water system, by the provision in the duct K of a damper M operated from the pressure of a balance drum in the case of a high-pressure hot-water system or thermostatically controlled by the water temperature.
