821,423. Regulating superheat in watertube steam boilers. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS Ltd., J. Sept. 7, 1955 [Sept. 9, 1954; March 18, 1955], Nos 26172/54 and 7990/55. Class 123(3) In a water-tube boiler of the forced circulation type having a combustion chamber 2 lined with steam generating tubes and fired by oil burners 3, the combustion gases passing upwardly through a bank 6 of tubes serially connected to tubes 4 and then through a superheater tube bank 9, the size of the chamber 2 and the rate of firing of the burners 3 is such that the heat output is sufficient only to generate steam with a moderate degree of superheat which, when the unit is part cf a marine installation, is suitable for manoeuvring or astern operations. During normal operation, when steam with a constant high degree of superheat is required, auxiliary burners 11 fire into a space 10 between the tube bank 6 and the superheater, the firing rate being regulated to maintain the superheat constant irrespective of load variations. The burners 11 are of the type having self-contained combustion chambers which are located outside the boiler casing, each burner injecting a stream of non-luminous, high temperature gases into the space 10. These gases mixed with the tempering gases from chamber 2 pass through the superheater at a temperature high enough to give the required steam temperature but insufficient to cause overheating of the superheater tubes or deposition thereon of slag.
