Abstract

1,163,072. Water-tube steam boilers; steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 29 Aug., 1967 [29 Sept., 19661, No. 39402/67. Heading F4A. In a steam generating and superheating system, hot gases from a furnace 54 lined with vapour generating tubes, flow through two parallel-connected sections, one section containing a bank of steam generating tubes 53 arranged between upper and lower drums, and the other section containing a bank of seriesconnected U-shaped superheater tubes 90 and having its floor, ceiling and end wall 68 lined with superheater tubes 71. The superheater section has ceramic refractory walls. The proportion of gas delivered to the respective sections is controlled by dampers 81, 82 by a device 93 in accordance with the temperature of the superheated steam sensed at 94 in the outlet header 40. The gas flows are united in duct 78 and thereafter pass to a stack or a fan 80. Steam from the generating tubes 53 is passed directly, or through an optional superheater 67<SP>1</SP>, to mix with saturated steam received from an accumulator (26), Fig. 1 (not shown), whereafter the mixture passes to the superheater tubes 90 to flow therethrough in countercurrent to the gas flow. Steam is received from the accumulator at substantially uniform flow and pressure. However, any variation in this flow is compensated by adjusting the quantity of steam produced in the generator section by adjusting the fuel flow to the furnace burner 54. Control may be effected to cause the superheated steam to be discharged at substantially uniform temperature and pressure. Steam is delivered to the accumulator via a steam and water drum (16), which steam is intermittently generated in the water-cooled hood or heads (12) of one or both of a pair of steel refining furnaces (10, 11). The steam is condensed in the accumulator and is flashed into saturated steam on discharge therefrom.
