Abstract

An asphaltic bitumen emulsion of the oil-in-water type, the asphaltic bitumen phase having had dispersed therein a minor proportion of oil-soluble alkali-metal petroleum sulphonates and the water phase having dispersed therein a minor proportion of a water-dispersible soap. The water-soluble or water-dispersible soap is preferably an alkali-metal soap of higher fatty acids, found in naturally occuring products, such as tall oil, fish oils e.g. sardine oil, or vegetable oils e.g. cocoanut oil palm kernel oil, corn oil, cotton-seed oil, soybean oil, or peanut oil. Normally, the soaps will be sodium or potassium soaps of one or more acids, such as lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic, ricinoleic, linoleic or linolenic acids and mixtures of these. The asphaltic bitumens employed in the present emulsions are those of paving grade and normally will have penetrations at 77 DEG F. between 20 and 200 and Ring and Ball softening points between 100 and 130 DEG F.
