Abstract
863,362. Carburetters. GRAY, J. A. July 30, 1957 [Dec. 5, 1956], No. 37113/56. Class 7(3). A carburetter comprises a throttle slide 14a jet tube 15, a plunger or needle valve 22 or sleeve movable with the throttle slide for progressively closing and opening the outlet of the jet tube, a pilot jet 31 and an air inlet passage 35 in communication with the pilot jet and atmosphere and extending through the throttle slide. As shown the pilot jet 31 extends through a hole 34 to a slot 33 in the throttle slide. The air inlet port 32 may be closed or opened by a spring-loaded adjusting screw (not shown). The pilot jet is preferably normally closed by a spring-operated valve (not shown), the arrangement being such that when the slide .is in its closed position the pilot jet is open and when the slide is raiseda predetermined amount the pilot jet is closed by the valve. On closure of the throttle valve a step 22a of the needle valve 22 closes the outlet of the jet tube 15 and the throttle moves down relative to the needle 22 so that a spring 26 is compressed. In the case in which a sleeve is employed instead of a needle valve, when the throttle is closed the main jet tube lies within the sleeve and all the orifices of the main jet tube including a compensating orifice are closed. In this embodiment the usual centrepiece may be omitted and the central hole in the body of the carburetter closed and the feed to the main jet is taken through a downward extension of the same passing through a hole in the float. In the heads of the main and pilot jet tubes a small screw may be provided which can be removed when the jets have to be cleaned. The main jet tube above the compensating-orifice may be tapered. Inclined main jet orifices may be replaced by a single slit extending longitudinally of the main jet tube or by orifices on opposite sides. A taper needle may be used for adjusting the pilot jet and the sleeve may alternatively be used in a similar manner to the needle in a conventional carburetter arrangement. The carburetter may be used with two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
