Abstract
863,349. Speedometers. AXE, E. C. (Hubley Manufacturing Co.). April 23, 1959, No. 13848/59. Class 106 (3). [Also in Group XV] A toy speedometer comprises a disc 15 freely rotatable on a sighting tube 1 and provided with a built-in sand-glass timer. A calibrated calculating recess 27 of the timer is connected to a chamber 23 separated from a further chamber 24 by a partition having a small passage 25, The sighting tube has an eye-piece 9 and, at its forward end, has a glass 8 on which sighting squares 29, 30 are etched. The disc 15 is normally maintained in the position shown in Fig. 2 by a spring 19. In operation, the user holds the speedometer against one eye by a grip 3 and sights an approaching vehicle at some distance. When the vehicle being timed fills the square 29 the user rotates the disc 15 anticlockwise through 90 degrees by a handle 18 and the sand begins to pass from the chamber 24 to the chamber 23. As soon as the vehicle fills the outer sighting square 30 the handle 18 is released and the disc is returned by the spring to its original position. The sand which passed into the chamber 23 then drops into the calculating recess 27 and indicates the speed at which the vehicle is travelling. The recess is tapered in depth to obtain linearity in marking the miles per hour graduations.
