Abstract

The invention comprises the compound of the formula: <FORM:0863223/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by treating a -carbethoxy-a -phenyl-butyric acid with thionylchloride, reacting the acid chloride obtained with dimethylamine, reducing the resulting N,N-dimethyla -phenyl-a -carbethoxy-butyramide with lithium aluminium hydride and benzoylating the resulting N,N-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2-hydroxymethyl -butylamine, and, if desired, converting the product into its acid-addition salts. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the products (see Group VI) have anti-tussive properties.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions, having antitussive activity, containing the compound of the formula <FORM:0863223/VI/1> or a non-toxic mineral acid-addition salt (e.g. the hydrochloride) thereof and a pharmaceutical carrier, may be in the form of powders, tablets, capsules, solutions and syrups, which last may also contain other drugs.
