Abstract

The invention comprises 1-o-tolyloxyethyl-4-phenylpiperidine and its non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by condensing a 2-o-tolyloxyethyl halide with 4-phenyl-, 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and hydrogenating the resulting product or by hydrogenating 4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine to 4-phenyl-piperidine and condensing this with a 2-o-tolyloxyethyl halide.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 1-o-tolyloxy-4-phenylpiperidine in admixture with one or more solid or liquid pharmaceutically acceptable inert carriers. The compositions may be in the form of tablets, capsules or elixirs for oral administration or may be in a form useful for injection. It is also stated that the hydrochloride and tartrate of the base are particularly useful as hypotensive agents.
