Abstract

Novel substituted piperidines of the general formula <FORM:1120405/C2/1> wherein R is hydrogen or lower alkanoyl, containing from 2 to 9 carbon atoms and Z is either a carbonyl group or a 1,1-ethylenedioxy radical, and the non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, are prepared by reacting in the presence of an acid acceptor and a non-reactive solvent 4-hydroxy-piperidine with about an equimolar amount of either a 4halogeno-p-fluoro -butyrophenone or a 4-halogeno - 1,1 - ethylenedioxy - 1 - (4 - fluorophenyl) - butane. The latter is obtained by reacting ethylene glycol, p-toluenesulphonic acid monohydrate and a 4-halogeno-p-fluorobutyrophenone. Therapeutic compositions, suitable for oral or parenteral administration with analgesic and muscle relaxing properties, contain the above novel 1,4-substituted piperidines as the active ingredient.
