Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0984364/C2/1> and their non-toxic acid addition salts wherein R1 and R2 when taken separately represent hydrogen atoms or together represent a single bond, Z, represents a hydrogen atom or an hydroxy group, and R6 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyloxyalkyl amino group containing up to 6 carbon atoms or, when Z1 represents an hydroxy group, R6 may in addition represent a nitro group or a group NR7R8, wherein R7 and R8 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or acyl group containing up to 6 carbon atoms and the preparation thereof by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0984364/C2/2> with a compound <FORM:0984364/C2/3> wherein Y represents the acid residue of a reactive ester and optionally converting by methods known per se a group R6 in the resulting product into another group also falling within the definition of R6. 1 - 21 - (p - N - 2 - Hydroxyethylaminophenyl) ethyl - 4 - m - trifluoromethylphenyl - 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine is prepared by reacting the p-aminophenyl analogue with 2-chloroethyl chloroformate to give 1-21-(p-N-2-Chloro-ethoxy carbonylaminophenyl) - ethyl - 4 - m - trifluoromethylphenyl - 1,2,3,6 - tetra hydropyridine and heating this with caustic potash. Pharmaceutical compositions useful in the treatment of psychiatric disorders comprise the compounds of the invention and a pharmacutical carrier and may be in the form of tablets, pills, dispersible powders, granules, emulsions, solutions, suspensions, syrups, elixirs, and capsules containing one or more of the active substances with or without the addition of diluents or excipients, for oral or parenteral administration.
